A regular on the Super High Roller circuit, PokerStars Team Pro Igor Kurganov won the PokerStars Championship Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller, topping poker legend Daniel Negreanu and a number of other accomplished players.
Eleven players cashed in the event, but Isaac Haxton (11th) and Daniel Colman (10th) busted before the final table for €103,200 each. Despite his $34 million in earnings and endless number of first-place wins, Negreanu, also a PokerStars Team Pro, fell first at the final table.
The Canadian held an A-K when he doubled up against the pocket sevens of Dietrich Fast, but swiftly deplenished his stack going into his next, and final, hand. Next he paired a 5-7 but Kurganov pulled a higher pair thanks to a Q-J in the hole and eliminated Negreanu in ninth place.
Stanley Choi was the next to get in a tight spot when he shoved his jacks against Kurganov’s A-Q. The flop paired the eventual winner’s ace and that was all she wrote for the final table’s only Chinese player.
Bryn Kenney was the next to go, hitting the rail when he pushed with a K-7. The action had folded to him, but Christopher Kruk called with an A-2. A blank board sealed the American’s fate and an ace-high took the hand. Kruk’s luck didn’t last long and he went home in sixth. Ivan Luca followed shortly after, losing on an A-9 to an A-10 with another blank board, banking €322,100 for fifth place.
Kurganov added another name to his list of eliminations when Germany’s Dietrich Fast got bold on a pair of twos. The Russian’s jacks dominated from the beginning, and when he flopped a set Fast settled for fourth place. Koray Aldemir followed his countryman out the door when he too tried to go up against Kurganov. A K-Q against an A-Q ended as quickly as it began when the board ran blanks and two-handed play began.
Barlomiej Machon of Poland had kept a low profile throughout the final table, and managed to strike a deal with Kurganov before heads up started. Once the deal was settled, the game was short lived and eventually ended with queens against a Q-J.
The win was Kurganov’s first in a PokerStars event – earlier this year he placed in two PokerStars Championship events in Monte Carlo
