The Aussie Millions $25K was the biggest ever on Australian soil, and Taiwanese player James Chen made sure to cash in on it. The young player was playing the best he could in Australia, taking his AUD$39,700 win from last week’s $2,500 H.O.R.S.E. event and parlaying it into a ticket for the $25,000 challenge. He then turned that into a win worth over AUD$861,840 – roughly US$648,098.
On Day 2 of the tournament, 25 of 133 original entrants returned to Crown Casino to duke it out for the 14 money spots. Defending champion Chance Kornuth hit the rail shortly before the money. Local favorite Jeff Rossiter was the first to walk away with cash after his elimination.
A final table of seven was set pretty quickly, and well-known Mustapha Kanit was the first to go. The eventual champ busted the Italian with queens to J-10.
Nick Petrangelo, another American high roller, was the next to go when he moved all in with a flush on the river. Brandon Adams, who had rivered a full house, called and Petrangelo settled for sixth place.
Five-handed play was a drawn out affair that saw Ryan D’Angelo slowly lose his chip lead. On his final hand, his A-Q was eventually bested by an A-K. His fifth-place finish won him AUD$207,480.
John Juanda, a poker veteran from Indonesia, went out not long after D’Angelo. He had been in the short stack for a while and took a leap of faith on an suited A-8. He was called by Chen’s nines and a dead board sent him packing in fourth. Three handed play lasted over three hours, defined by small pots and unimpressive hands. Antoine Saout finally made a move with an A-9, but he, too, ran into Chen, who managed a pair of kings to send the French player home.
Heads-up play lasted another two hours between two players who couldn’t hold onto the lead. After a while, Adams’ momentum cooled and he went all in with a J-4 suited. Chen called with a suited A-3 and a board of blanks gave him the win.
