You may not have heard of Johanssy Joseph yet, but you will soon. The Connecticut native has come on in a big way in the last few years, including first-place wins at the 2009 and 2016 Borgata Poker Opens in Atlantic City. He is rapidly approaching $1 million in total live earnings.
Joseph took a big step toward that lofty landmark last week at the Poker Night in America Choctaw Main Event, where he added $210,737 for his first-place win over a 1,224-player field.
Schuyler Thornton was the first to be eliminated from an “unofficial” final table of nine, followed by Bob Beck, Bart Bogard, and Brady Thorpe. The final table was officially set with five players remaining, led by Miguel Hernandez and Adrian Buckley.
Gints Galvins was the first to be eliminated after butting heads with Buckley. Galvins shoved with an A, K but a board of blanks gave the win to Buckley, who held pocket queens.
Jonathan Alfonso was the next to take a chance, shoving against Joseph, who held an A♧, 7♧. Alfonso’s A♡, 4♢ didn’t pair up on a 7♧, 5♡, 2♢ board and he was awarded $72,424 for his fourth-place finish.
Joesph (A, 5) was at it again in the next duel against Hernandez (A, 4), who put his last 25 big blinds on the line with his small ace. The 5♡, 5♧, 3♤ board secured the set for the eventual winner and sent the start-of-table chip leader home in third.
Heads up play wasn’t a big show down, and it didn’t take long for Joseph to secure a solid lead over of Buckley. The runner-up was down to 20 big blinds when a classic flip decided the winner. Joseph held an A♢, 8♢ against a pair of twos; the ducks held up until river (K♡, 5♢, 4♧, J♤) when an 8♡ gave Joseph the win.
Buckley, originally from Colorado, now has $1,595,346 in live earnings after his runner-up showing.
