It was a tough battle against Uri Reichenstein in heads-up play, but Sebastian Malec pulled out a stunning victory in the Main Event of the European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona to become the latest champion and $1,258,210 richer.
Harcharan Dogra Dogra was the first player to be eliminated on the final day when he butted heads with Thomas de Rooji with the former in the big blind. Dogra Dogra held a 3♡, 2♧ against De Rooij’s A♡, 4♤. After a two surfaced on the flop, Dogra Dogra went all-in, but a four on the river gave De Rooij a higher pair. Seventh-place earned Dogra Dogra $258,803.
It wasn’t long after that Andreas Chalkiadakis busted in sixth-place when he faced the A♧, Q♧ of Adam Owen. Chalkiadakis shoved all-in with K♡, Q♤ but the board proved useless to both players and the ace-high was enough to eliminate the Greek.
Zorlu Er joined Chalkiadakis on the rail next with an A♤, J♧ in the big blind. Reichenstein raised on the button with a 10♢, 4♢ and found a quick flush with an A♢, K♢, 3♢ flop that left Er in the lurch. The 10♧ and 6♡ that followed weren’t enough to pull him from the hole and he went away in fifth.
The final four players discussed a deal with no success and, once play resumed, De Rooij was the next to fall. After a big loss to Owen left him in the short stack, he shoved under the gun against Reichenstein with A♤, 7♧. He was taken down with a pair of threes, but the $599,633 payday was the biggest finish of his career.
Malec finally got in on the aciton against Owen, just minutes after De Rooij’s elimination. All three remaining players had money in the pot, but after Owen (Q♢, J♤) and Malec (A♢, 8♢) went all-in, Reichenstein folded to let them battle it out. The rest of the hand was uneventful and Malec’s ace-high eventually held up to narrow the field to two.
Malec was the short stack when heads-up play began, but he wasn’t going down without a fight. The lead changed hands multiple times during the five-hour, one-on-one battle, but the excited Malec eventually pulled out the win when he turned a flush and became the Main Event champion.
