The much-anticipated last event of the PokerStars European Poker Tour Prague was just as dramatic as expected. After 13 seasons of the best European poker players facing off in the Czech Republic, it all came down to the Main Event and a final table of just six players, all of various backgrounds and experience levels.
When the last day began, action came quickly for Sam Cohen, the last female player left at the table. In just the third hand, she went head-to-head with David Peters, who had an exceptional year of big wins and was the only other American at the final table. Cohen shoved on the turn and was sent home when Peters called with a set of nines.
Despite hopes of a comeback, short-stack Marius Gierse of Germany wasn’t able to pull out a Cinderella story and was sent home in fifth after a nasty run in with Marton Czuczor. Sergei Petrushevskii was the next to go. Fourth place was an impressive ending for the Russian, who qualified online and had only ever won one live cash. He scored €284,550.
When three-handed play began, the final trio discussed deals but none was reached and play resumed after a misunderstanding between Czuczor and Peters.
At this point, Peters was the most experienced player left in the game, but it just wasn’t in the cards. An over-bet bluff on the river put him in a deep hole, and eventually he settled for €397,300 and third place. Despite this disappointment, the third-place finish was enough to shoot him to the top of the Global Poker Index Player of the Year race, dethroning boy-wonder Fedor Holtz.
A deal was finally reached between the final two players who were about even going into the end of the final table and the pair agreed to play for €50,000 and the title. When push came to shove, the two went all in on a K, J (van Putten) and pocket twos (Peters). When a jack surfaced, the Dutch player dashed the hopes of the Hungarian (no one from Hungary has ever won an EPT Main Event trophy), and walked away with €699,300.
