Jerry Wong has spent his fair share of time at World Series of Poker (WSOP) tables, but it is in Las Vegas this month that he hopes to snag his first piece of jewelry. Going into the final table second-to-last in chip count, Wong hopes he can write a Cinderella story at the WSOP Main Event and take home the $8 million first prize.
Before the 34-year-old claimed his seat at the most coveted poker table in the word, he built up a resume that includes $1,365,205 in career tournament earnings and 19 WSOP cashes. Like many of his final table companions, Wong came up to the big leagues through online poker where he has played for years as “Hummylun.” A regular on websites like PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, he has snagged high-profile wins including PokerStars Sunday 500 and $125,000 Guarantee.
To date, Wong’s biggest live cash scored him $725,000 – almost as much as he is guaranteed for making it to the Main Event final table. This huge win came in the Bahamas, but he hasn’t had the same big-level luck the other times he cashed in the WSOP Main Event – he finished 309th for $32,871 in 2012.
“It was nerve-wracking,” Wong told ESPN of his experience this year, “but I played my game and didn’t worry about breaking.”
As he got closer and closer to the final nine, Wong said learned to block out distraction and throw himself headfirst into the game. “Just going day by day, [I’m] trying to be a creature of habit, a creature of routine,” he told Poker News. “Simplify my life so I can put all of my mental energy into poker. Try not to think too much about the outside stuff.”
After he reached the final table, he said he would be taking a similar distraction-less stance in the lead-up.
“I’m gonna nap for three months,” he said.
Wong will be in seat nine with 10,175,000 in chips when the final table begins on Oct. 30.
