Jesse Sylvia hasn’t stopped chasing the dream since finishing second at the 2012 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, and his efforts finally paid off. After a few third-place finishes over the last four years, Sylvia scored the big victory he’s been waiting for this weekend at the World Poker Tour (WPT) Borgata Poker Open in Atlantic City.
Sylvia’s biggest challenger at the Borgata Open was Farid Jattin, a Colombian poker pro who held almost half the chips in play by the time the field was narrowed down to the final six. After a series of rough hands, however, Jattin was the first to go, leaving the door (almost) wide open for Sylvia to take home the $821,811 first-prize.
It was the eventual winner that first made a dent in Jattin’s massive lead. Sylvia trippled through with a pair of fours, taking a good chunk of chips from both Simon Lam and Jattin in the process. Lam wasn’t going down without a fight, however, and he doubled through Jattin shortly after. Taha Maruf and Zach Gruneberg also delivered tough blows to the erstwhile chip leader.
In one of his final hands, Jattin shoved with 5♤, 4♧ and Sylvia called with a straight draw of his own. An ace on the flop would allow Sylvia to put together an ace-high straight by the river. That hand put him into the chip lead.
Soon after, Jattin ran a pair of eights into the pocket aces of Gruneberg. The latter found a set and Jattin was eliminated after just 26 hands, pocketing $167,942 for sixth-place.
Fifth-place finisher Chris Limo couldn’t recover when a set of sevens from Sylvia dominated his early shove. Despite his earlier double-up, Lam wasn’t destined for a long stay; a run-in with Gruneberg sent him home in fourth with $250,000.
Maruf went away in third, getting somewhat unlucky. He called Gruneberg with a pair of queens while the latter had ace-high. The board eventually paired the ace.
The heads-up match was neck-and-neck until a well-played jack-high saw Sylvia take control. Gruneberg wasn’t able to recover and Sylvia ultimately won on a pair of jacks.
