The famed Irish Open crowned another victor this week, naming Daniel Wilson the champion and adding €150,000 to his lifetime earnings. The Irish Poker Open was first organized in 1980 and is the longest-running No Limit Texas Hold’em poker tournament in Europe (and the second-longest in the world). During its 36-year run, it has garnered an impressive reputation and is a meaningful addition to any poker resume.
This year, 802 players entered the tournament and it took four days to narrow down the field to the final table of nine. Wilson set the tone early, securing a double elimination that sent Michael Rossiter and Igor Arkhipov home in ninth and eighth, respectively; Wilson raised with a pair of aces and Arkhipov went all-in with A♧, K♤. Short-stacked Rossiter called with the Q♢, 8♤ but Wilson’s aces held, narrowing the table to seven.
It was over an hour before another elimination: Brian Nolan hit the rail in seventh for €18,000. The slow pace didn’t last long, however; Michael Conaty scored a double elimination soon after.
Holding A♧, K♡, Conaty minimum-raised to 200,000 and Petr Vejmelka (A♡, 10♢) raised all-in for 1,710,000. Next, David Costello (A♢, Q♤) moved all-in for 2,460,000 and Conaty called.
The flop (K♢, 8♧, 2♧) gave Conaty an out-of-the-gate lead and the turn and river (8♡, 6♤) did nothing to help the other two players, who went home in fifth and sixth.
At roughly 9:00 PM, Wilson’s K♧, 10♧ trumped Vegard Ropstad’s A♢, K♢ when Wilson’s 10 paired. Just one hand later, the eventual winner called Tomas Soederstroem when the later moved all-in holding 8♢, 8♧. Wilson showed A♧, K♧. The pair held strong on the flop but when the turn matched Wilson’s ace, it was down the heads-up play.
Wilson held a commanding chip lead going into heads-up play with Conaty. Before a single hand was played, the two discussed a deal that would leave €6,500 for the winner, but that talk was left on the table and play continued.
On the final hand, Conaty pushed all-in for 9,000,000 while holding 9♡, 9♧. Wilson called with A♧, K♧, and the classic race was on. The flop paired Wilson (A♤, 5♤, 2♢) and the two sixes that followed did nothing for Conaty, who busted in second for €85,000.
