Federico Butteroni has a lot of ground to cover if he is going to come out on top of this year’s World Series of Poker Main Event. Starting with the lowest chip count (6,200,000), the 25-year-old will be going up against some of the best players in the world for a shot at the ultimate title.
Butteroni is the first Italian to make it to the November Nine since 2010 when Filippo Candio finished fourth and took home a payday of $3,092,545. Matching or bettering Candio’s will be tough, but not out of the realm of possibility for Butteroni, who started Day 7 with one of the lowest chip stacks yet still managed to make it to the final table.
“I’m so happy for what I did to be in the November Nine and to play for the first prize of $7 million is something that makes me feel really happy. I’d like to do my best in the final table in November,” Butteroni told Poker Listings. “I’m so so proud to represent Italy and I feel a big responsibility.”
His impending payday of at least $1 million will multiply his current tournament winnings almost ten-fold. (He currently has $103,006 in live tournament winnings and $45,633 from cash games.) Butteroni currently ranks 450th on Italy’s all-time money list but will rocket into the top-20 when the WSOP tournament ends. A second or first-place finish would put him at the top of the list.
“Everyone supports me and it’s [been] an amazing experience [reaching] the final table,” he said. “It was actually very hard because I was the short stack in the tournament.” Butteroni also spoke of the challenges and nerves that came with competing against some of poker’s biggest names, like Daniel Negreanu, who narrowly missed the November Nine this year.
Last year, Butteroni made three final tables at the Crown Casino in Perth, Australia. The biggest score of his career came earlier this year when he took home $45,633 for finishing 20th in WSOP Event 28: $1,500 Monster Stack.
“I think I played very well for the last seven days,” Butteroni said of his ride to the final table. “I had a very good mind set – this is one of the things I am most proud about.”
