The only World Series of Poker bracelet winner in this year’s November Nine, Max Steinberg will be in seat four when the cards hit the table in November for the Main Event’s final table. Steinberg, who finds himself fifth in chips, actually stopped playing poker full time almost two months ago. But he’s certainly going to see the final table through, despite his recent career change.
“The funny thing is that I basically quit poker two months ago,” Steinberg told PokerListings. “I started to do daily fantasy for a living, so I haven’t dreamed about [the Final Table] lately.”
It was daily fantasy sports that lead Steinberg back to poke; he qualified for the Main Event by playing Fantasy Basketball on DraftKings.
Before his decision to step back from the game, he had accumulated nearly $2 million in winnings from live tournaments and even more through online cash games. The 27-year-old now finds himself in the running for the biggest score of his career, the $7.96 million Main Event grand prize.
But the Iowa native is long odds to take home first, with just 20,200,000 in chips going into the final table (compared to 63,100,000 for chip-leader Joe McKeehen).
Steinberg won his gold bracelet in the 2012 WSOP $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em event, rising above a field of 2,795 players to earn a $440,238 first-place price. His most recent tournament cash win was in August of last year when he took home a modest $3,431 from the Arizona State Poker Championship Main Event.
His other notable results include runner-up in the 2012 World Poker Tour Legends of Poker Main Event for $293,490; second in the 2013 WSOP 3,000 No-Limit Hold’em Mixed Max event for $231,501; and second in the 2013 Southern Comfort 100 WSOP National Championship for $219,799.
Steinberg now lives in Las Vegas, just 15 minutes from the Rio where the championship will be held, and will spend the next months brushing up on old skills and getting his head back in the game.
