He may not have a household name or a giant chip stack going into the final table at the World Series of Poker Main Event, but New York-based Patrick Chan will still be a force to be reckoned in this year’s edition of the “November Nine.”
Chan started his poker career online, like many, but has slowly started playing more live cash games and tournaments – a career move he hopes will pan out come Autumn.
“I can’t even describe how I’m feeling right now,” Chan told the WSOP Youtube channel in August. “It means a lot to me – I’m a poker professional and I’ve been striving for this for many years in my career.”
Chan has yet to score a major pot but, proving the old adage that hard work pays off, he is still successful enough in the game to support himself; he has 36 cashes since 2010 and five career cashes in WSOP events. His final table appearance – which comes with a minimum $1 million payout – will be by far the biggest score of his career, almost doubling his $524,263 in live tournament winnings.
“My favorite part of the game is tournaments. I just like to play a lot of hands,” said the 26-year-old. “I think Joe [McKeehen] is the toughest opponent because he has all the chips in play and he is a really experienced tournament player. I’ve been playing with him for many years.”
The Brooklyn nativeis second-to-last in chips – with only 16 big blinds (6,225,000) to his name. His best tournament finishes to date are a third-place at the 2012 Borgata Winter Poker Open, which earned him $131,895; a twelfth at the 2014 WSOP Event 8: $1,500 Millionaire Maker; and a runner-up finish at the Parx Casino Big Stax $2,500 Championship.
“I’m just focused on maintaining, eating healthy, studying short stack games for when I come back and not playing too much poker to get myself all stressed out and stuff,” Chan said of his final months of preparation. “Poker is pretty stressful.”
