One of the less-assuming players to reach the final table at this year’s World Series of Poker Main Event, Thomas Cannuli has a mere $52,235 in live tournament earnings and currently holds $12,250,000 in chips. Before qualifying for this year’s final table, Cannuli’s highest score came from his 691st place win for $18,406 in last year’s Main Event.
“I’ve gotten very lucky to be here,” Cannuli told PokerNews. “I was all in one time behind the whole tournament, but I won all of my pots I was ahead in, and that makes me very lucky. I’m just very blessed to be in the situation I’m in. It’s a dream come true for me. I’ve been dreaming of this moment for six years now. It wasn’t the easiest road for me. I’ve went through struggles. This is just amazing for my friends and family to see what I’ve accomplished.”
The 23-year-old has spent the last few years building up his professional poker reputation and relationships with the game’s legends, including Jeff Gross who called him “a little brother, a protégé.” With the sixth highest number of chips on the table, Cannuli will have some making up to do if he hopes to challenge the current chip leader Joseph McKeehen, who holds 63,100,000 worth of chips.
In addition to his previous main event appearance, Cannuli finished 26th in the 2013 Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza III Main Event and eighth in the 2014 WSOP Circuit Harrah’s Philadelphia for $13,648.
“It’s a dream come true,” Cannuli said. “I feel like I’m in fantasy land right now. It’s incredible.”
Most of the New Jersey native’s experience has come from online poker in his home state and cash games. Other than the occasional tournament, the young player built his confidence through other mediums and is planning on spending the next month focusing on the upcoming final table.
“I’m definitely taking a break [in the interim time],” Cannuli said. “I’m going to relax because I’ve worked really hard the past couple of years playing every day for 10-12 hours a day. In about a month and a half, I’m going to get sharpened up and play some tournaments.”
All November Nine players are guaranteed a $1 million payday.
