The headline event of the World Poker Tour Playground is underway with 134 entries, but it was a busy week before the main event kicked off with a number of titles being awarded to lesser-known players. The Montreal tournament is expected to wrap up Wednesday after awarding $1,000,000 in guaranteed prizes.
The first event ended with Karim Idrissi taking home $21,482 CAD for an impressive win in the Wild $150. He began the final day of play not even in the top five, but had secured the chip lead by the time the final table started. It was the Canadian’s second tournament cash ever, which he was awarded after striking a three-handed deal with second and third-place winners Arnold Yaxley and Alexandre Gaudreau.
The $220 NL Hold’em 8-Max Freeze event ended in an eight-way deal that named Charan Malhotra, another Canadian, the champion. It wasn’t his first live cash but it was close, and he earned it after defeating 271 other entrants. The final hand saw his pocket eights best the pair of deuces held by Francois Gagne.
The festival’s third event was one of the most anticipated: the $250 Frenzy with a $200,000 guarantee. It took three days of play to finally crown a champ, and Isaac Buswell was the one to capture the title and take the biggest share in a six-way chop.
Santiago Plante, the eventual runner up, had a 3:1 chip advantage when it was down to the final two players, but after a few lead changes it all came down to a pair of kings that both players flopped. Buswell’s kicker was victorious though and he sealed the win on a river with a second pair. He earned $28,974 for first.
Another notable win came for Jeremy Galin, who topped the field in the NL Hold’em Deepstack Turbo – a one-day event with a $16,975 prize pool. Chops seem to be the way to play the WPT Playground, and after a three-way chop in the fourth event, Galin was able to get away with the trophy and the largest stack of cash.
After bubbling the Frenzy, the pressure was on for Jordan Saccucci who got back into the action during the $1,100 NL Hold’em 50/50 Bounty. The event drew an unexpected 145 players, but it wasn’t a problem for the eventual winner who picked up $17,000 for top prize, in addition to 11 bounties worth $500 each.
The main event of the WPT Playground is currently underway, check back for a winner later this week.
