We’re five rounds into the 2017-18 English Premier League season and the frontrunners for the Golden Boot are already starting to stand out.
Romelu Lukaku (Man United) and Sergio Aguero (Man City) currently lead with five goals apiece, and both are solid candidates to finish at or near the top. Lukaku (3/1 odds) netted 25 goals for Everton last season, 40% of the team’s total. This season at United, he’s seeing plenty more chances. With Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic consistently feeding him through balls, he will probably end the season with the most opportunities to score. If he’s as consistent as he was last season, that should be enough to earn him the top spot .
Aguero (4/1) sits just below Lukaku in the odds. The Man City star striker is no longer the team’s sole striker and will have to split goalscoring opportunities with newcomer Gabriel Jesus (7/1). In all likelihood, Pep Guardiola will opt to play with a front two this season instead of sending a solo Aguero. That’s great news for Manchester City, as a team, but it dampens both Aguero and Jesus’ chances of gilding their trainers.
Last year’s top goalscorer, Harry Kane (5/1), remains Tottenham’s main man up front. But with two vastly improved Manchester clubs, it’s going to be hard for the Spurs striker to keep up. Nevertheless, the reliable Englishman finished the last two seasons as the top EPL scorer and has a decent chance of nabbing a third.
Arsenal and Chelsea paid top dollar on strikers over the summer, with the Gunners bringing on Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette (25/1) and Chelsea picking up Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata (10/1). Both players are world-class strikers, but they won’t have as many goalscoring chances as they might like. Arsenal are continuing a downward trajectory from last season and Chelsea lost a handful of crucial players over the transfer window.
Liverpool have an amazing front-line this season, with players like Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and the newly acquired Mohamed Salah (all 40/1 odds). However, with so many players eager to push forward, none will see the volume of chances necessary to win the scoring title.
In my view, bettors should not look outside of the top three favorites (Lukaku, Aguero, Kane) in search of a windfall payday. In all likelihood, the award will go to a Manchester-based player; both City and United have scored a whopping 16 goals after just five rounds, so it’s going to be tough for anyone else to compete. Keep an eye out for Kane, though. The man is known to exceed expectations.
