Some big happenings transpired last weekend in college football. The biggest was Ohio State’s home loss to the Connor Cook-less Spartans, which ended the Buckeyes’ 23-game win-streak. Sparty held the Buckeyes to just 132 yards of total offense. You read that right. Ezekiel Elliott, J.T. Barrett, and Jalin Marshall couldn’t muster 150 yards from the line of scrimmage.
Give the MSU defense credit. They did everything right. But the offense deserves a ton of plaudits for those stats, as well. They controlled the clock with a dominant run game, putting up 203 yards on the ground and winning the time-of-possession roughly 39:00 to 21:00. It’s a lot harder to gain yards when you never have the ball.
Elsewhere, the Big 12’s CFP hopes took a blow when Oklahoma State – the conference’s last undefeated squad – fell to Baylor. But that blow was partially parried by the Sooners, who took down TCU (30-29), moving to 10-1 and into the Selection Committee’s top-four (no. 3) in the process. If Oklahoma can muster one more win at Oklahoma State this weekend, they have a great chance to remain in a playoff berth at season’s end.
Oklahoma’s vault up the rankings came at the expense of the Irish. Ranked no. 4 last iteration, Notre Dame failed to impress against mediocre Boston College, eking out a 16-13 win. The committee saw fit to drop them to no. 5, below both Oklahoma and (still undefeated) Iowa.
Not everything changed last weekend. The top two teams in the last CFP poll, Clemson and ‘Bama, both held serve at home against lesser opponents. They’re guaranteed playoff spots if they can win out. Of course, unlike with the Big 12’s Sooners, winning out for the Tide and Tigers entails a conference championship game.
So who’s most likely to crack the four-team field at this late hour? Just look down to find out …
