Liverpool (-110) vs. Arsenal (+294), Draw (+260)
When you’re forced to choose between two thoroughly disappointing teams, who do you pick?
That’s what bettors are faced with this weekend (Saturday, March 4th) when Arsenal (15-5-5, 50 points) travels to meet Liverpool (14-7-5, 49 points) for the 27th fixture of the English Premier League.
Liverpool are reeling after a humiliating 3-1 loss to relegation-threatened side Leicester City. The Foxes were on a five-game losing streak before trouncing Liverpool at King Power stadium. After winning the 2015-16 title, Leicester tanked in spectacular fashion and have had an atrocious season so far, failing to show even a glimmer of last season’s performance. That is, until last week.
The Foxes exploited Liverpool’s high back line throughout the entire game, allowing Jamie Vardy to slip through multiple times and play the Leicester City counter-attack we remember so fondly. Liverpool had absolutely no response to the onslaught and were lucky not to lose by more.
Liverpool may have had a strong start to the season, but they have only managed to win one of their last seven league games. They are effectively out of the title race with only a Champions League qualification spot left to play for. They were eliminated from the FA Cup by Wolverhampton, the 20th-ranked team in the Championship, and didn’t qualify for any European cups.
Arsenal are not doing much better. They didn’t have a league game last weekend because their scheduled opponent, Southampton, had their EFL final. They won their last match 2-0 against 19th-place Hull, but lost the two before that. Their Champions League hopes are all but gone after a 5-1 thrashing against Bayern Munich.
The Gunners risk losing Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez at the end of the season, and the future of long-time manager Arsene Wenger is uncertain. If they fail to qualify for the Champions League next year, there’s a good chance we’ll see their star players leaving for greener pastures.
Of the two teams, Arsenal have been slightly less disappointing this season. The match is at Anfield, but with morale so low, Liverpool playing at home may not even be an advantage for them.
Pick: Arsenal (+294)
