New York Yankees (-146, 8.5 o/u) at Texas Rangers (+136)
The New York Yankees (57-42, 27-25 Away) must be wishing runs could carry over to the next day, after scoring enough yesterday to sustain them for three games. An 11-run second inning sparked a 21-5 drubbing of the Texas Rangers (47-52, 16-28 Home) and New York will get a chance to do it all over again tonight at Globe Life Park (8:05 PM Eastern Time).
“Strange,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said to the Associates Press. “I don’t know if I’ve been a part of that where you give up five in the first, and you don’t give up another hit the rest of the game, and you score 21 runs. I don’t know if I’ll ever see that again.”
The Rangers certainly don’t want to see it again, so they’ll send righty Colby Lewis (10-4, 4.49 ERA) to the mound in hopes of ending a three game slide. Lewis gives them a tremendous chance to win as he’s 2-0 on his last three starts, going for 7.2 innings, allowing five hits, two runs while striking out nine in the 4-2 win against the Angels on his last outing.
The Rangers have lost three straight dating their last game of the series against the Los Angeles Angels and are eight games behind the Angels in the AL West standings.
Meanwhile the Yankees are on a tear winners of their last four and going 9-2 since the All-Star break. The run has them sitting seven-games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East. They’ll look to Masahiro Tanaka (7-3, 3.64 ERA) to continue that trend tonight. Tanaka will be looking for his eighth win of the season; fourth straight after taking down the Oakland A’s, Seattle Mariners and Orioles in his last three starts.
Even as the Yankees are playing better, I still don’t trust Tanaka this season. He has never faced any batters in the Rangers order in his career. I don’t see how the Rangers get swept at home with Josh Hamilton going back to the lineup after he sat out on Tuesday. Lewis is an underrated pitcher that will bring home the win against a Yankees order that should have saved some offense for tonight.
