I’d love to lambaste the Redskins organization for their decision to move ahead with Kirk Cousins at quarterback, if for no other reason than to get a “like” from RGIII himself. The fact is, both sides have made some poor decisions during Griffin’s tenure and now a painful divorce is imminent.
Griffin has shown immaturity and, according to reports, has been a pretty awful teammate; but Washington did heap incredible pressure on the kid when they essentially traded away their future to draft him second overall in 2012.
The question now is how much longer will Griffin kick around the capital, clipboard in hand?
Washington is no doubt exploring options for a trade, but with RGIII due to be paid $16 million next season, finding a suitor could be difficult. (What team wants to be on the hook for that kind of scratch for a likely backup?)
The best case scenario for Washington management would be that an early-season injury to a starting QB drives up Griffin’s value. Barring that, it’s likely Washington releases the former “franchise savior,” and Griffin joins Patrick Ramsey, Gus Frerotte, and plenty more in the Hall of Failed-Redskin-Passers.
However, in the NFL, as long as you have at least one functional knee, teams are going to give you a second chance (see Sam Bradford). So, even though his drama is almost done in Washington, Griffin’s NFL career isn’t over unless he wants it to be.
If he’s released, Griffin will get his choice of teams as a second-stringer. (With Matt Hasselbeck getting on in years over in Indianapolis, there’s a hilarious scenario where RGIII becomes Andrew Luck’s backup.) And depending on how the year plays out in places like Chicago, Buffalo, Philadelphia, and New York (Jets), there’s a good chance he enters training camp next season fighting for a starting job once again.
How good a chance? Let’s take a look …
