Pittsburgh Penguins (+127) at San Jose Sharks (-140, 5 o/u)
The Pittsburgh Penguins (14-7 SU, 5-4 Away) once again dominated the flow of play, but the San Jose Sharks (13-9 SU, 8-2 Home) breathed new life into the Stanley Cup finals with a 3-2 overtime win in Game 3. Now trailing two games to one, the Sharks can get back on even terms with another win tonight in Game 4 at the SAP Center (8:00 PM Eastern).
The Pens outshot San Jose 42-26 in the game, but could only put two past goalie Martin Jones. Ben Lovejoy notched his second of the playoffs to open the scoring in the first, and Patric Hornqvist got his eighth to give Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead in the second. Justin Braun and Joel Ward answered for San Jose before Joonas Donskoi played the hero in OT.
One major concern for both teams is the play of their supposed superstars. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Joe Thornton, and Joe Pavelski have all failed to register a goal.
“You look through these playoffs and third-line, fourth-line guys have stepped up for both teams and scored big goals,” Sharks center Logan Couture said Sunday to the Associated Press. “It’s not necessarily that the big guns have scored the huge goals for both teams. You need that when you get to this point.”
Braun, who had one goal in his first 43 career postseason games, has now scored in two straight.
Saturday’s loss continued a rough trend for the Pens, who are now 1-11 SU in their last 12 in San Jose. That said, they were unlucky not to come out of Game 3 with a win, and the better betting option for tonight looks like the O/U. All three games have stayed under the total so far, and six of the last seven between the teams dating back to the regular season.
Both goalies are playing pretty well, especially Jones, and the stars aren’t sniping. Roll with the under again tonight.
