A few weeks ago, we noted that the arena lease issues between the Arizona Coyotes and the city of Glendale could mean a move to Vegas for the struggling franchise.
Well, unfortunately for Sin City, the sides have worked out their differences, meaning the team won’t be on the move anytime soon.
But that hasn’t put Vegas’ NHL dreams out to pasture just yet. Businessman Bill Foley (or, more specifically, his company Black Knight Sports and Entertainment LLC) submitted a proposal to the league for an expansion franchise in Vegas. According to Foley’s website, the league has approved that proposal for “Phase II” of the process.
What does that mean?
As CBC notes, “during this process they [meaning Black Knight] will provide the league with additional information that will include details about the markets, as well as the arena plans.”
That may not sound like a lot, and it’s certainly no guarantee that the NHL will be in Las Vegas next season or thereafter. But Foley and company were required to put down a $10 million deposit (with $2 million being non-refundable). The Fidelity National Financial chairman isn’t prone to putting up that kind of money without a strong likelihood of seeing a return.
If you live in town and are debating subscribing for season’s tickets for the would-be team, perhaps this little nugget from Foley’s site will push you over the top: “The name of the team will be determined by our season ticket depositors, so get ready with your suggestions.”
Start your brainstorming, fellow Sinners!
