Portland Timbers (+105) vs Seattle Sounders (+280), Draw (+268)
The next installment of the Timbers-Sounders rivalry will take place on Sunday (June 25th) at Portland’s Providence Park. It’ll be the third match between the Seattle Sounders (5W-7L-5T, 20 points) and Portland Timbers (7-7-3, 24 points) in just under a month.
Seattle emerged victorious in the last two meetings, winning 2-1 when they met a few weeks ago and 1-0 in late May. Portland has also dropped its last two, overall, falling to Colorado (2-1) and Minnesota (3-2). However, all four of those setbacks came on the road, where the team is just 2-6-1. The Timbers are a completely different team when playing at home (5-1-2). In fact, the Timbers have lost just one of their last 13 games at Providence Park.
The disparate home/road split has the Timbers at .500 overall. Their signing of David Guzmán has paid off nicely, and they have a nice goalscoring duo in Diego Valeri and Fanendo Adi.
After winning the MLS Cup last year, the Sounders have been fighting a slump. They’re currently eighth in the Western Conference and have only won one of their last four games. If the season ended today, they would not make the playoffs.
Their away record (1-6-2) is even worse than Portland’s, and they’ve lost four straight away from CenturyLink Field.
The only thing keeping the Sounders afloat at the moment is their central midfield. Cristian Roldan and Osvaldo Alonso have been the backbone of the squad this season, and any success they’ve had is largely thanks to them.
The two most recent MLS Cup winners have a lot to play for. The Sounders are at risk of missing out on the playoffs, and the Timbers’ spot is far from guaranteed. Both teams have played 17 games already, which is more than most teams in the West.
If the Sounders are having trouble performing on the road, then they’ll really struggle in front of the Timbers’ fan base. This is one of the fiercest rivalries in the MLS and the Sounders will definitely feel the heat from the Portland crowd.
The Timbers are a great team when playing at home, and the Sounders are dismal when playing away. This seems like a great chance for the Timbers to end their losing streak, and +105 is a decent price on a team that’s won five of eight at home this year, especially with Seattle’s poor defense and abysmal road record.
Pick: Portland Timbers (+105)
