Arsene Wenger has been on the hotseat at Arsenal for a while now. He got his team to the Champions League spots last season, but 2016 started with a thud thanks to a 4-3 home setback to Liverpool. His team’s results have been a bit better of late, winning two of the next three in the EPL and drawing PSG (1-1 away) in their first UCL match. But the on-field product is still lacking, and if Arsenal don’t seriously challenge for a league title this year, Wenger is likely to see his two-decade tenure finally come to an end.
Yes, the Frenchman has three EPL titles on his resume, but none since 2004 and the Gunners’ fan-base is restless for trophies.
Who will replace the coaching legend when he finally bites the dust? The Arsenal gig is a high-profile, high-paying job that will garner the attention of both established names and hot up-and-comers.
Howe has been the manager of Bournemouth since 2012 and led the team back to the EPL this year. He’ll move up the coaching ranks one way or another in the coming years, and Arsenal looks like a good fit. The two teams have a good relationship; the Gunners sent midfielder Jack Wilshere to Bournemouth in August.
Low, manager of the German national team, has held his current post for almost ten years. He’s done (almost) everything with the squad, including winning the 2014 World Cup. Given Arsenal’s current struggles – which largely stem from their play without the ball – Low’s ball-possession style may be able to minimize those flaws.
If he’s ready to leave the national team, Arsenal would jump at the chance to bring him on board. But, in all likelihood, he sticks with the Germans until the 2018 World Cup.
Mancini is a former Manchester City boss, winning the league title with the Citizens in 2012. The Italian also has three Serie A titles to his credit thanks a brilliant run with Inter Milan (2006-2008).
His return to Inter (2014-2016) didn’t go well and he was fired last August. He proved to still be a defensive guru, though, and that’s something Arsenal could use. Would fans tolerate him for long if the goals dry up?
Bergkamp is an Arsenal legend. He was part of the “Invicibles”, the team that went undefeated in the EPL in 2003-04. The Dutchman was not only one of the most dangerous strikers in the world in his time, he was always a master technician on the field. So, even though he doesn’t have any managerial experience, there’s reason to think he could succeed on the bench.
That would be a similar career path as Pep Guardiola. He didn’t have any managerial experience before he snagged the Barcelona job, and we all know how that turned out.
Will his fear of flying hold him back?
