Another week, another UFC event. Tonight (Saturday, June 10th), the promotion heads to Auckland, New Zealand for Fight Night 110.
It’s not exactly a stacked card, but any fight with Mark Hunt promises to be entertaining. The walk-off knockout king is scheduled to fight the hard-hitting Derrick Lewis. Also on the card is a middleweight showdown between Derek Brunson and Dan Kelly.
Let’s preview the fights and take a peep at the odds.
Mark Hunt (12-11-1) returns to the octagon just three months after suffering a brutal knockout against Alistair Overeem. This time, he faces the affable and heavy-hitting Derrick Lewis (18-4).
A devastating knee to the head left Hunt face-down on the mat when he fought Overeem in March. Before that, he endured a heavy beating against a juiced-up Brock Lesnar. The 43-year-old knockout artist is nearing retirement, but a hometown fight was too enticing to turn down.
Derrick Lewis was given the chance to showcase his striking when he took on Travis Browne in February. After taking some heavy shots in the first round, Lewis came back and overwhelmed Browne in the second. The fight marked Lewis’ sixth straight win.
Hunt and Lewis are both happy to stand and trade blows. Both are powerful strikers, but no one can land a knockout like Mark Hunt. Hunt usually struggles on the ground and against more technical fighters, but he doesn’t need to worry about that when it comes to Lewis.
Lewis is a tough opponent for anyone in the heavyweight division, but stylistically this match-up favors Hunt. Given that he’s getting slightly better odds and fighting at home, the Kiwi is the play.
Pick: Mark Hunt (+100)
After two big losses, Derek Brunson (16-5) is looking to stage a comeback against the aging Dan Kelly (13-1).
Brunson was on his way to being a middleweight title contender before being stopped by Robert Whittaker and then taking a controversial loss to Anderson Silva. Before that, he was on a five-fight streak. He’s a well-rounded fighter, capable both on his feet and on the mat.
Kelly landed the biggest win of his career in March when he clinched a split decision win against former champ Rashad Evans. It was a boring, lackluster bout and neither fighter put his opponent in any real danger. Other than that win, Kelly hasn’t achieved all that much in a journeyman career, even though he’s only suffered the one loss (a TKO to Sam Alvey in May 2015).
At 39 years old, Kelly doesn’t have much left to offer. He’s dealing with a whole host of injuries and he doesn’t have the endurance to outlast Brunson. The payout isn’t great on the American, but it’s still better value than the aging Aussie.
Pick: Derek Brunson (-265)
