Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson (26-2-1) has been the undisputed pound-for-pound king of the UFC for some time now. He’s ruled over the flyweight division since its inception back in 2012, making a record-equalling ten title defenses. His conduct, both inside and outside of the octagon, makes him an ideal champion for the UFC.
So why is UFC boss Dana White so upset with him?
Johnson is just one fight away from breaking Anderson Silva’s record of ten consecutive title defenses. So his next opponent is a huge deal for him. The UFC is pushing for a fight between Mighty Mouse and former bantamweight champ T.J Dillashaw, but Johnson has his reservations.
This has infuriated Dana White, and the UFC is now embroiled in a bitter stand-off with one of the most successful fighters in the promotion’s history.
How will things pan out for Demetrious Johnson, the UFC, and the flyweight division? Here are the numbers!
The UFC holds all the cards here, so if they’re determined to match Johnson up with Dillashaw, then that’s what will happen. They’ll throw in some PPV points to sweeten the deal for Mighty Mouse, but at the end of the day, can the flyweight champ really afford to walk away?
If, for whatever reason, the fight doesn’t get made, then there’s a long list of flyweight contenders waiting for a shot at the title. Joseph Benavidez is the number one contender but he’s already had two unsuccessful shots against the champ. It’s more likely that one of the younger guys, like Ray Borg or Sergio Pettis, will be granted his first title shot.
Then there’s bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt, who D.J has expressed interest in fighting. But Garbrandt is out with a back injury at the moment, and there’s already a long list of bantamweight contenders in line for a shot at him.
Sure, Mighty Mouse has been neglected by the UFC. But where’s he going to go?
If Johnson isn’t happy with the exposure and paychecks he’s getting from Dana White, then he’s definitely not going to be moving to one of the lesser promotions. The only other option is retiring, and sitting just one title defense from the record, it’s unlikely he’ll walk away just yet.
According to Demetrious Johnson, Dana White threatened to shut down the entire flyweight division if Johnson does not comply with his demands. This seems a little far-fetched. The flyweight division does not garner the same amount of interest as the heavier weight classes, but shutting it down seems a little drastic.
If D.J faces Dillashaw as his next opponent, he’ll really have his work cut out for him. The former bantamweight champion is in spectacular form at the moment after dominating John Lineker in one of the most impressive displays of his career. However, Dillashaw has never fought at flyweight so it’s uncertain how well he would do (or whether he’d even make weight).
If Johnson’s next opponent is a flyweight contender, then the odds are heavily in his favor. No one currently in his weight class holds a candle to the champ, who’s still in his prime at age 30.
